This Is My Story

Allow me to introduce myself.  My name is Melissa and I want to first thank you for being here. Whether I know you personally or you found my blog in the midst of scrolling, welcome to my little online home. Here you will find me sharing personal stories, mental health resources, healthy lifestyle tips, and pieces of my writing. Vulnerability in communication is a key component in how I connect, so allow me to be vulnerable and share a little bit about who I am and how I got here.

Anxiety and perfectionism have plagued me all my life. As a typical first-born child, I have always been extremely hard on myself. In my eyes nothing I did was ever good enough and I lived in a black-and-white, all-or-nothing reality. My brother was born when I was four, and that event marked the start of my lifelong battle with jealousy, unworthiness, and inferiority. Years later I witnessed the deterioration of my parents’ marriage and subsequent divorce proceedings, and life as I knew it was over. Growing up in a conservative town where none of my friends had divorced parents, I felt damaged, embarrassed, and judged for things I had no control over. This only perpetuated the vicious cycle of perfectionism, comparison, and overcompensation. As a way to minimize having to be vulnerable in a cruel and chaotic world, I carefully constructed an image of who I thought I should be. It was my mission in life to not only appear perfect, but to be perfect. Surely if I could control myself and everything around me, I wouldn’t experience the lack of control or the anxiety that came with it ever again. Or so I thought.

I did a pretty good job of holding it all together…

…throughout college and well into my twenties: I graduated with honors, had an array of amazing friends, and landed a well-paying government job where I could easily support myself and my active social life. I married my best friend, bought a gorgeous house that we turned into a home, and got our first dog all before the age of 26. I was doing everything right, everything that I thought I should be doing, so there was no way anyone could question me. On paper I truly was perfect.

I started cracking under the self-induced pressure when I was about 28, after the anxiety began rearing its ugly head more so than ever before. Ever so stealthily I had turned into a version of myself that I no longer recognized. The fun-loving, jovial, motivated woman I had been for so long was now angry, resentful, jealous, anxious, and unhappy. I suffered from body dysmorphia and my anxiety was out of control.  I obsessed about people following me and attempting to kill me, and I would check the locks on the doors 15 times before going to bed. I woke up in a panic almost every single night and was living in constant fear. But how could this be? I was diligently following life’s so-called checklist, so what was the problem? I wanted so badly to understand why this was happening and why I was suffering so much. I was finally diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and was prescribed medication to lessen my chronic worrying. Although it numbed my emotions and my pain temporarily, it didn’t address the underlying causes of my condition. I began to wonder if I had always been this way, just now I could no longer hide the symptoms. I realized that there was so much I couldn’t remember.

I had been in and out of therapy for most of my life, but it was time to get serious about my healing. I found an amazing life coach and was finally able to reconcile with my past and how it contributed to the person I had become. I discovered how much damage hiding behind the veil of perfectionism was doing to my psyche – so much more than I ever realized. Slowly but surely over the course of about three years, I was able to peel back the superficial layers and meet my authentic self for the first time. I began to explore what I needed to thrive and the kind of life I wanted to create for myself. And then came the tough decisions: My husband and I separated and sold our home, I went back to school, moved into an apartment by the lake, traveled to India on my own, and quit my job. I let go of every security I had, and all I could do was trust that everything would be okay (and that I wouldn’t starve or have to move back in with my parents). It was the ultimate test of putting into practice everything that I had been learning and training.

Fast forward five years and I really am living my dream life. While I don’t use that phrase lightly, it’s the honest truth. But while I am so thankful that my journey of self-love and self-discovery that led me here, I still can never forget what it’s like to feel unworthy, unloved, and unsafe in every area of life. That’s exactly why I decided to create a career in mental health that allowed me to help others do the same thing, but hopefully with far less time, effort, and resources. It’s time for you to let go of what you were and into who you know you are.

It’s time for you to create a new story.
